Most robotic hoovers vacuums require regular maintenance. This includes emptying the bin (and sometimes rinsing it) and cleaning the cameras and sensors. They also need to be plugged in. Many have smartphone apps to schedule, adjust settings and more.

The iRobot Roomba 980 is the latest in the series of top-of-the-line robot auto vacuum cleaner cleaners that are an essential part of any modern household. This model is incredibly powerful suction and a HEPA filter that can aid anyone who is concerned about allergies. It also comes with a large battery that can be cleaned for up to two hours, and return to its dock automatically when the bin is full.

Smart mapping is another feature that allows it to identify areas in your home that require attention and provides a cleaning path to get around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does a good job of maneuvering around toys placed on the floor, or furniture legs that stick out from under the furniture. It also has a camera that will snap the Roomba back to the real world when it starts to drift away from its original location.

iRobot also added an additional set of rollers beneath the Roomba that do not have bristles, which makes them more likely to resist knots than earlier models. These are also a little higher than the older rollers and are able to fit under beds and couches that are low, and they're designed to let this model move more easily on varying floor types.

What makes the Roomba 980 stand out from other models of this class however, is its integration of the new dirt detection feature that utilizes cameras to detect bits of embedded dirt. This is a significant improvement over the previous model that relied on an algorithm that was driven by sensors to bounce around the room and clean the area three times, at different angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on carpets and hard floors. It scored extremely well on carpets with a low pile, and on mid-pile. It did a fair job of picking up pet hair, but it struggled with very long and thick pet fur that was clumped together.

Despite these slight limitations, the Roomba 980 remains one of our most efficient robots, and isn't even nearly as expensive as some of the other top-of-the-line models in this list. It has a lot of features you'd expect from a flagship model, but doesn't come with all the fancy apps or smart home integrations you'll find in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up quickly and is ready for use immediately. After removing the yellow bin insert and pull tab from its undercarriage it is simply connected to an outlet on the wall or to its Home Base docking stations, click the "Clean button" and let it do its job. It will automatically return to its dock when its battery is out or is full of debris. It also has indicators on the top of the device to indicate that its bin is full, automatic Vacuum Cleaner it requires recharging or if its Wi-Fi signal is lost.
