The touch panels are more sensitive than the XM3. They respond faster to the touch of a panel, and this makes them easier to control during a phone call or to listen to media. While the WH1000XM4s aren't perfect, they are some of the best wireless headphones we've ever tested. They're comfortable, well-made, and come with an excellent battery that lasts for more than 30 hours continuously. The WH1000XM4s are a better alternative to the Bowers & Wilkins Wireless Over-Ears Px7 S2. The Sonys are more comfortable, and their ANC can block out more background noise. The B&Ws feature an EQ that is more flexible and an app companion to adjust the audio quality. The B&Ws are more robust and can be paired with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. Additionally, they support aptX HD and feature an AI-driven engine that tries to upscale compressed music to high-resolution. This is known as DSEE Extreme, and it improves the clarity of music when listening to lossless audio files.

2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless

The $329 Bose QuietComfort45 sound cancelling headset is the most recent version of a headset which is a popular choice among commuters and passengers all over the world. Rather than reinventing the wheel the new model follows the same formula that made the predecessor so popular, adding the USB-C port, which is better at cancelling noise and a longer battery life.

Like the QC 35 II before them, these over-ear Bose headphones have a premium look and feel that oozes quality. The headband is made of plastic, and has a sturdy feel with metal hinges at the pivot points and the ratcheting mechanism that is familiar when you extend or retract the earcups. The cups are cushioned and have soft pads that can be worn over your ears without pressing your head. When folded they weigh 238 grams. They can be used when you're wearing an overcoat or sweater since the noise-canceling works even when they're not on your head.

Despite their reputation for comfort, the QC45s do not offer the most impressive sound quality for this price range. The frequencies are tinny and lack the detail that more expensive headphones may be able bring out. The upper registers are boosted which is great for the majority of music but can be a problem for more delicate and complex genres. The bass is good, but it lacks the punch.

The ability to pause the playback after removing the headset is a feature absent. This is a standard in this price bracket and is something that Bose's rivals have been offering for years. Another oversight was the absence of an in-app EQ. Bose has preset EQs available in the app but it would be nice to have a manual control.

Many of the improvements aren't that obvious, but they make a pair of over-ears that appear to be an upgrade from the old one. The Momentum 4s are flat and do not fold. They come with an outer case that protects them while on the move. They also follow the pattern of a number of other recent Bluetooth headphones, such as the ones from Sony and Bowers & Wilkins, to be incredibly device-agnostic. They work with both Apple iPhones and Android phones, but they do not have the AirPods' extra features like Find My Support and head-tracked spatial audio.

The most obvious change in this model is the huge battery, which claims up to 60 hours of playback when noise cancellation activated. That's easily double what most of the competition can offer and is enough for a long-distance trip without worrying about finding a power outlet to charge it.
