The Q30's 40mm speaker effectively block the majority of ambient noise when ANC is turned on. This makes for a very pleasant listening experience. They have a natural sound profile that is a bit on the treble end, which some may be unable to reproduce bass (we got better results with the Bass Booster equalizer). You can fix this easily using the Soundcore App, which has an eight-band Equalizer.

The headphones feature the power button and a pairing button on the left earcup along with the USB-C port for charging. The right earcup has buttons for play/pause, volume up/down and volume up/down. Double-clicking these controls lets you to skip tracks or play previous ones. They also have an option to speak to them that allows you to ask to change the mode or set an alarm. You can also cover the right ear cup with your fingers to activate ambient modes to allow you to hear everything around you without removing the headphones.

The battery life of these headphones is fantastic and the battery life is also excellent. In our tests with ANC switched on the Q30 lasted nearly an hour longer than the other headphones. This gives you plenty of time to prepare for an extended flight or a day at the office. They can be quickly recharged with the included USB-C cable and you'll be able to see an alert when they're getting empty.

Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal's Bathys Wireless is a pair of high-quality over-ear Bluetooth headphones that feature active noise cancellation, as well as Bluetooth playback. Sony's DSEE Extreme Engine (which upscales music that has been compressed to near high-res) as well as Bluetooth's LDAC Technology, are both included. The XM5 headphones are no different from the previous generation of headphones from WH in regards to noise cancellation. The XM5s aren't dust or water resistant. Sony recommends not sweating on them or wearing them in the rain. This might not be a problem for many people, but it might cause a problem for those who spend a lot of time at the gym or lives in a city with rain.

Apple AirPods Max

The Apple AirPods Max are a pair of wireless headphones that fit over the ear equipped with Bluetooth technology and noise cancelling. They feature 40mm dynamic drivers designed by Apple with an audio profile that is neutral and is focused on the mids and highs while not going too loud at either end of the spectrum. This makes them ideal for both movies and music. They also provide higher fidelity compared to other Wirless headphones.

The headphones are lightweight and feel comfortable on your head. The ear cups, which are made of memory foam, are covered with woven fabric and sit comfortably over the ears, do not put pressure on the sides or forehead. The earcups can also tilt and rotate to accommodate various head shapes. The hinges that are spring loaded have a firm but not overly robust clamping force that makes sure that the ear cups stay in place throughout listening sessions.

You can toggle noise cancelling by pressing a small button on the top of the right earcup. There's also a pushable, Jog-dial-like button, akin to the digital crown on the Apple Watch, that you can turn to control volume and press it once, twice or thrice to playback control. Siri is activated by pressing and holding the button. The buttons are simple to use and well-placed, however I would have liked to have a power button that would shut off the headphones when they are not in use. The headphones automatically switch to standby mode when they are removed from your ear or placed in their case, and they only wake up when you place them on your head again.

Spatial audio is another cool feature. It uses the accelerometers, gyroscopes and iPhones or iPads to determine where you are moving. Then, it repositions the sounds to make them appear to originate from that particular location. This creates an immersive theater experience for films and videos recorded in 5.1, 7.1 or Dolby Atmos. The only drawback is that spatial audio requires an iOS device to be used and you won't be able enjoy it on other devices.

The AirPods Max are a decent pair of headphones, but I'd be slightly smug about entering an Apple Store and spending $549 on the headphones if I knew that they'd be beaten in a year by the new model. The AirPods Pro have more advanced features and better battery performance, making it hard to justify the extra cost for the majority of people.
