BMW Ghost Immobiliser

If the anti-hijacking mode has been activated the attempt to restart the engine will be blocked. Once the system detects that the vehicle has stopped moving it will honk the horn and flash the indicators, if it is not able to find the correct code it will also stall the engine (where it is). The Anti-Hijack feature can be removed by entering your push sequence or by enabling service mode, which allows your vehicle to temporarily begin and drive, without having to enter your PIN.

The device is connected to the vehicle's CAN Data Network (similar to an Ethernet cable) and a personalised PIN code is inserted into it. The pin code has to be chosen prior to the vehicle's start. This stops thieves from using a copied key or replacing the ECU in order to bypass this system.

If the vehicle is being stolen the Ghost will go into service mode and disable all functions unless you have the PIN code or can use the mobile application to disarm it. This is a feature that was designed to protect your vehicle from high-tech thieves who are using relay boxes to steal your vehicle. It will even stop the thieves from being able to use their mobile phones to activate your sat nav system or MP3 player to track your car!

Ghost also blocks the 'Relay-style Frequency amplification'. This is the most common way a car is being stolen with a key-fob that has been copied or stolen through hacking. Ghost allows you to stop this by installing an anti-theft device in your vehicle, called Secure-A-Key. The device is installed inside the key-fob in your vehicle and disconnects the battery after a few minutes of inactivity, this can be done on most modern PKE key-fobs.
