Glass

The process of replacing a window pane is relatively easy and can be accomplished by homeowners with basic hand tools. Alongside a replacement pane, the following components are needed for the replacement process: latex glazing putty glazier's points; pliers; and the use of a heat gun to warm the old putty, if necessary. Wear safety glasses and gloves before you begin. Working with broken glass can cause serious injuries.

Begin by removing any broken pieces of glass. This can be done with the help of pliers though using flathead screwdrivers can be effective in the pinch. Make use of a wood chisel or putty knives, to take away any remaining old putty around the frame and the window sash. Be careful to not scratch the window sash. Take your time and work slowly. This can be done best on an elevated ladder, not on the ground. Also, you should have someone on the ground to keep it in place.

Make sure the window frame is ready to accommodate the new pane when you have removed the old putty. Take measurements of the width and replace window pane height of the opening in the sash, subtracting 1/8 inch from each measurement (to allow for seasonal expansion and contraction). These measurements can be taken to a hardware or home center store to get an item cut from stock glass to the right size. Alternatively, you can cut the glass yourself, if you have the appropriate tools.

After installing the glass Apply caulking on the edges. This will make the glass weatherproof. Then install a glazier's point on each side of the frame to secure the pane into the right place. The points shouldn't be tight enough to cause friction between the frame and sash, but they should also not be loose.

Before putting the putty on, work it in a gentle manner until it is smooth and free of lumps. Cut it into pencil-sized pieces. Apply the first strip to the frame's corner. Work from one corner to another, making sure it is even and smooth.

Glazier's Points

The glazier's points are the small triangular pieces of metal which help to secure glass into the frame of a window without damaging or scratching the delicate surface. It's easy to understand how to use this nefarious tool and you can save money on the cost of an installation by a professional.

After removing the old putty, glazier points as well as any remaining leftovers, clean the frame thoroughly using a utility knife. Lightly sand the frame in the rabbet grooves to smooth out rough areas. If you sand wood protect it with painter’s tape to avoid accidental damage.

Fortunately, windows can be easily replaced by simply putting a new piece of glass in its the right place. The glass is held in the position with a tiny metal clip, called a glazier’s point and putty. This compound is also referred to as glazing compound. Before you install a new pane, first get rid of the old one and clean up the area using a rag and an abrasive scraper that is a pull type or the wood chisel. Wear safety glasses and gloves while you do this work. If the window is attached to the frame, you'll need to use a heat gun to soften the adhesive prior to cutting it loose.

If you are planning to reinstall your original sash, remove the molding that supports the old pane. Then you can sand the sash down to ensure it's smooth and ready to be re-caulked. Once the sash is re-installed, apply a new silicone caulk to the glass to ensure it won't leak or discolor in time.

Take the glazing points out of the rabbets, the grooves in the sash that the glass sits. If they're difficult to chisel, use an instrument like a heat gun over them to soften first. If you're using a heat gun, be careful not to damage the railings of the sash or the sash itself by using the tool too closely.

Prepare a bed for your new pane after you have removed the old glaze and putty. Roll a rope with glazing compound between your fingers and then make it about 1/2 inch thick. Place it into the rabbets, where the glass will be placed. The glass must be positioned against the putty on both sides. If you need to, lightly tap your glass into the rabbet with your thumb.

If the new pane is cracked, you can apply a silicone caulk or glass glue made from solvents to seal the crack prior to pressing it into the sash. If the crack isn't sealed, you'll require putty to keep the water out. Once the putty is dry remove the oily film off the glass and let it dry completely before painting. If you paint before the putty is completely dry, it will not form a solid seal and could be leaking or discoloring over time.

Paint

You might be worried about replacing a damaged piece of glass. It's true that replacing a single pane glass doesn't need to be costly if you do it on your own. In fact windows with double panes can be replaced at less than the cost of an expert.

If you're working with large glass windows first, ensure that it is securely fixed to the frame. Using the proper tools and techniques to make this task relatively easy and fast.

When you are ready to begin, remove the old window pane. Pry out the glazing points made of metal that are attached to it. These are tiny triangles of metal that act as "nails" that hold the window in place. They are placed under a glaze putty or bead that hardens to an unbreakable wedge that holds the wood frame securely in place and hides the sharp edges.

Once you have the old pane removed, clean up the surrounding frame and wood. Scrape off any paint and sand down the rabbet grooves, where the glazing points were. Sand them to bare wooden surfaces, allowing you to paint the frames the same color. After sanding the wood then apply a layer of flax oil. This will help extend its life.

Then, take measurements of the dimensions of the window opening. You will need to measure the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the entire opening, as well as the thickness. Subtract 1/8 inch from each measurement to ensure you get a precise size for the new pane. This will allow for seasonal changes in the glass.
