Bentley Mulsanne Key Celebrates Its Centenary

Mulliner Bentley's bespoke coachbuilding unit, has created a unique keycase to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Bentley. Made of Dark Stained Walnut and Piano Black veneer, it includes a flying "B" paperweight, a set keys, and a brochure with never-before-seen 1930 8 Litre imagery.

Aesthetics

As a design-oriented company Bentley takes its aesthetics seriously. It's evident in the exact location of its quilting the choice of leather sourced from the by-products of cattle, wood from sustainable forests and the innovative patterns on its levers. When you drive by a car like the Continental GT W12, its beautiful sculptural design is highlighted by carefully selected lighting.

The Continental GT is Bentley's most sophisticated open-top car. The rear of the tonneau in the Continental GT, for example, featured the largest piece ever of dark-stained Burr Walnut veneer that was book-matched. Similarly, the electrically-operated glass sunroof and champagne cooler that incorporated hand-blown and hand-cut lead crystal bottles marked a new benchmark in luxury and innovation.

Design

The Bentley Mulsanne Key comes with two buttons one of which opens the trunk, and the second which starts the vehicle. The key also has a switch for turning on the parking brake. Each key takes two days to create. It is cut by hand shape, sewn, sealed and polished to create an excellent finish. It is strong compact and fits the Bentley key perfectly. Its style is similar to the Volkswagen Phaeton large car's key however, it feels heavier and has a more premium feel.

It also has Secure-A-Key which can help prevent keyless entry theft. This device is placed inside the remote-control fob and then shuts it off if the key is not utilized for a period of a few minutes. It blocks thieves from transmitting the key's frequency to other devices that can unlock and start the vehicle.

Personalisation

Bentley's bespoke division, Mulliner, allows customers to create their own car. The guests sit at a collection of images referred to as "mood stations" and pick a collection of photos ranging from scenic landscapes to sporting events that are inspiring to them. Every time a choice is made, the pattern that emerges reveals the model colors, style and color preferences for the personalized Bentley.

The resulting configuration is loaded onto individual R.F.I.D.-enabled keys which are presented to the guests in a custom-made key case. Bentley estimates it takes approximately 500 man-hours in order to create and assemble the average Mulsanne. The reluctance to embrace modern technology is the key to this laborious task. Instead of using a machine to space the perfectly-matched leather seats, workers at the Crewe factory do it by hand. Instead of letting the car's built-in sensors guide it to parallel and perpendicular parking spots, drivers have to do it by hand.

Bentley showcased its Mulliner personalization capabilities in the release of a special Mulsanne W.O. Edition, that pays tribute to William Osler, the founder of Bentley. Edition, which pays homage to the founder William Osler Bentley. The 100 limited edition cars include a key that displays an item from the 1930 8 Litre crankshaft.
