Bentley Mulsanne Key Celebrates Its Centenary

Mulliner Bentley's bespoke coachbuilding unit has created a unique keycase to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the company. It's made of Dark stained Walnut with Piano Black Veneer and includes a flying "B" paperweight, keys, and a booklet featuring never-before-seen 1930s 8 Litre images.

Aesthetics

Design

The Bentley Wings on the headrests and seats are embroidered in Centenary Gold, adding to the feeling of celebration. A bespoke Bentley key case is also included in the Centenary Specification, making the Bentley experience all-inclusive.

Function

The Bentley Mulsanne key has an open button on the trunk, and another button that turns on the car. It also has a switch to turn on the parking break. There is a knob that can fold and unfold the mirrors while parking in tight spots. This feature helps you get in and out of your car.

The key is made of vegetable tanned leather and takes about two days to create each one. The key is cut by hand, then shaped, stitched and sealed, then polished to give a superior result. It is sturdy, compact, and fits the Bentley key perfectly. Its design is akin to the Volkswagen Phaeton large car's key, but it feels much heavier and has a premium feel.

It also has Secure-A-Key which prevents theft of keys with no key. This device is put into the remote-control fob, and disables it in the event that the key isn't used for a few minutes. It prevents thieves from transmitting the key's frequency to other devices that can be used to unlock and start the car.

The configuration that is created is then loaded onto individual R.F.I.D.-enabled keys, which are presented to guests in a hand-crafted key case. Keys can also be fitted with Bentley Muliner Personalised Welcome Lamps that light up the door's opening pathway with the owner's name and/or emblem as they are approaching the vehicle.

Bentley estimates that it requires 500 man-hours to construct and put together a Mulsanne. The reluctance to embrace new technology is the key to this lengthy and laborious process. Instead of using a machine to place the perfectly matched leather seats workers at the Crewe factory do it by hand. Drivers are required to park their vehicles manually, rather than relying on the built-in sensors to direct them to perpendicular and paralell spots.

During the event, Bentley displayed its Mulliner personalization capabilities using a special example of the Mulsanne W.O. The Mulsanne W.O. Edition pays tribute to the founding father of the brand, William Osler Bentley. The limited edition cars come with bently keys that display the 1930 8 Litre crankshaft.
