How to replace Window pane Window Panes

Take out any broken glass pieces remaining. It is recommended to use pliers, but a flathead can work as well. Utilize a wood chisel or putty knives, to take away any old putty that remains around the frame and window sash. Be careful to not damage the window sash. Be careful and slow. Apply this coat with a brush or the tip of your putty knife, and then use the chisel, or the back end of the putty knife to gently hammer in the new sash and glazier's point into the grooves of the rabbet. Repeat this procedure every 10 inches along the perimeter of the frame.

Putty

A hurled baseball, an errant rock or a fallen branch can cause a window pane to crack or break. Fortunately, windows can be replaced by simply putting a new piece of glass in its place. The glass is held into place by a small metal clip, referred to as a glazier’s point and putty. This compound is also called glazing compound. Remove the old pane and clean the area using a rag, a pull-type scraper, or a wood chisel. Wear gloves and safety glasses while doing this work. If the window is glued to the frame, you'll have to use a heat gun to soften the adhesive prior to cutting it loose.

If you're planning to replace your original sash, remove the mold that holds the old pane. Sand the sash until it's flat and ready to receive new caulk. Once the sash is installed then, apply a new caulk made of silicone around the glass to ensure it will not leak or change color in time.

Remove the glazing points from the rabbets and the grooves in the sash, where the glass is. If they're hard to chisel out, you can try holding an instrument like a heat gun to soften them before you do. When using a heated tool, be careful to not damage the sash or its railings.

After the old glazing points and putty have been removed prepare a bed for the new pane. Roll a rope of glazing compound between your hands, shaping it to be around 1/2-inch thick. Then, push it into the rabbets where the glass will sit. The glass must rest against the putty on both sides. If you need to you want to tap your glass lightly into the rabbet using your thumb.

If the new pane is damaged, you can use the silicone caulk or glass glue that is based on solvents to cover the crack before pressing it into the sash. If the crack is not sealed, you will need to use putty to keep water from getting in. Once the putty is dry clean the oily film off of the glass and allow it to dry completely before painting. Paint before the putty has dried completely. It will not make a strong seal and could discolor or leak over time.

Paint
