The sash is an interior frame that moves up and down vertically in windows that open. This article will show you how to perform several simple repairs to the sash.

Weather Stripping

Wood window sashes give the classic look to your home and, when properly maintained, they will last for years. However, they can be damaged or degrade in time due to exposure to elements and normal wear and wear and tear. It is essential to have the tools you need before you begin. Begin by marking the location of the hinge channel on the frame using pencil (Photo 1). This will help you get the channel back in place correctly when you're finished. Take the sash off, and remove all the hardware, including the beads for parting, cords, and chains that keep the sash in place. Soften any hardened putty with the help of a heat gun set at medium and equipped with a shield to block the nozzle. Remove the old sash and put it in a labeled bag.

Sash Weights

Sash weights can be changed to enhance the efficiency of your window sash and reduce the energy cost. Sash weights are hefty lead or iron cylinders enclosed inside a hidden compartment and attached to the movable sash by a rope. They function as counterbalances, which allows you to open and close the window without the need for mechanical or electrical devices. When they fail, sashweights tend to be neglected or not used by homeowners.

A weight from a sash that fell out of the cavity is difficult to retrieve and you'll need to locate a new one that fits correctly. You will also require a new piece of string, a length of sashcord and some sashpulleys to tie the new weights to the cord.

To replace sash cords, the first step is to remove the access panels from the jambs. They are usually installed by screws or nails and must be removed or moved. It may be possible to remove them with an axe or hammer, but it is always better to lay out dust sheets before beginning any work.

Once the access panel is removed, you can start working on the sash. Prise the narrow parting beads (also called "tie rails") out of their grooves using flat bar or chisel. It is essential to take your time because they are usually placed in a wedge or nail. If the sash is still in place, pry the mortise-and-tenon joints out with a hammer or screwdriver and then remove each wood peg. The sash should move freely, however it may need some lubrication to make it feel less stiff.
