Sony has a fine reputation for its headphones and the WH-1000XM5 headphones are no exception. It is at the top of the'mainstream' over ear headphone market and borders the 'luxury' lifestyle area where brands like Apple, Montblanc, Bang & Olufsen and Montblanc are located. This means the XM5s are expensive in price tag but, if you can afford it, there are few better over the ear wireless headphones available.

The XM5s come with a variety of features that simplify the lives of the listener and automate tasks that they would be required to do manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme Engine (which upscales music that has been compressed to near high-res) and Bluetooth's LDAC Technology, are included. This allows high-quality audio to be streamed at bitrates which are higher than Bluetooth. There's even a built-in microphone to allow making hands-free calls.

The XM5 headphones aren't any different from the previous generation of WH headphones in regards to noise cancellation. They are among the best at cutting down on the continuous drones that can be heard in subway and train carriages. The XM5s are great at their job isolating listeners from the noise of busy streets and airports, too.

The sound quality is very good. The XM5s aren't as detailed in the low frequencies as the XM4, however, bluetooth headphone there's a more pronounced sense of clarity and transparency, too. The Apple AirPods Max are a pair of over-ear wireless headphones with Bluetooth technology and noise cancelling. They also provide better sound quality when compared with other headphones.

The headphones are lightweight and comfortable on the head. The ear cups are made of memory foam and covered with a woven fabric. Siri can be activated by pressing and holding the button. The buttons are simple to use and are well-placed, but I would have liked to see a power button that would switch off the headphones when in use. The headphones automatically go into standby mode after being removed from your ears or put in their case, and they only come back on when you slide them over your head once more.

Spatial audio is another great feature. It utilizes gyroscopes, accelerometers, and iPads or iPhones to determine where you are moving. Then, it adjusts the sound so that they seem to be coming from that particular location. This creates a theater-like experience with movies and videos made in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 or 7.1. Only iOS devices can be used to listen to the spatial audio.

The AirPods Max are a decent pair of headphones, but I'd feel a bit ripped off going into an Apple Store and spending $549 on them if I knew they'd be beaten in a year by the new model. The AirPods Pro have more advanced features and improved battery performance, making it difficult to justify the additional expense for most people.
