That allows for streaming of high-quality audio at rates that are higher than traditional Bluetooth. It also has a built-in microphone for making hands-free phone calls.

The XM5 headphones are no different than the previous generation WH headphones in regards to noise cancellation. They're among the best at eliminating the constant drones that can be heard in underground and train carriages. The XM5s do an excellent job of shielding listeners from the background noise of busy streets and airports also.

Sound quality is also excellent. The XM5s aren't quite as precise in the lower frequencies as the XM4, however, they have a higher level of clarity and realism, too. For example the bass on Rage Against the Machine's Bullet in the Head flexes the Sonys' muscles with real power and definition without flattening everything else. The XM5s are also able to deliver precise and tight bass notes in Massive Attack's Angel.

The battery life is also good, providing up to 30 hours of audio with ANC active and up to 40 hours when it's off. This is more than enough to last for a weekend getaway or several days of heavy usage.

The only issue is that the XM5s don't have any dust or water resistance protection. Sony actually advises against sweating on them or wearing them in the rain. This might not be a big deal for the majority of people however for those who spend long hours in the gym or live in a rainy location it could be a major problem.

Apple AirPods Max is a pair of wireless headphones over-ear which feature Bluetooth technology and noise cancellation. The AirPods Max are a decent pair of headphones, but I'd feel somewhat smug walking into an Apple Store and spending $549 on the headphones if I knew they'd be beaten in a year by the second-generation model. The AirPods Pro have more advanced features and improved battery life, making it hard to justify the extra cost for the majority of people.
