The battery life on these headphones is great, too. In our tests with ANC turned on, the Q30 was able to last for nearly an hour longer than its rivals. This allows you to enjoy an extended flight or a busy day at work. They can be quickly recharged using the USB-C cable included and you'll be able to see a warning when they're approaching empty.

The sound quality is also very good. The XM5s lack as many details in the low-frequency range like the XM4, however, they do have an increased sense of clarity and a greater sense of openness. For example, the bass work on Rage Against the Machine's Bullet in the Head flexes the Sonys' muscles with real power and definition without flattening the other elements. The XM5s are also able to provide precise and accurate bass notes on Massive Attack's Angel.

Battery life is excellent and can last up to 30 hours of listening time when ANC is in use and 40 hours if off. That's more than enough to last for a weekend getaway or a long period of usage.

The XM5s aren't waterproof or dust-proof. Sony recommends not sweating into them or taking them out in the rain. This may not be a problem for most people, but for those who spend much time in the gym or live in a rainy area, it could be a big issue.

Apple AirPods Max

The headphones are put into standby when they are removed from your ears or when placed in their case. They will come back to life when you put them on your head.

Another cool feature is spatial audio, which makes use of the gyroscopes and accelerometers in the AirPods Max and your iPhone or iPad to figure out the direction you're going, and then repositions the sound to make it seem like they're coming from those locations. This creates an immersive theater experience for videos and movies that were recorded in 5.1, 7.1 or Dolby Atmos. The only downside is that spatial audio requires an iOS device to be used and you won't be able enjoy it on other devices.

The AirPods Max is a decent pair, but I would be a bit disappointed when I spend $549 at an Apple Store knowing that the second-generation model would be better after a year. The AirPods Pro have more advanced features and improved battery life, making it hard to justify the extra cost for the majority of people.
