How to Replace Window Panes

A damaged window pane can be a nuisance. It can also be a chance to upgrade your glass to energy efficient or insulated windows to reap benefits like greater comfort, a higher potential for resales, and less bills.

It's a project you can tackle yourself at less than the cost of hiring an expert. It requires the right tools and an hour or two of your time.

After the old putty and glazier's points are removed, thoroughly clean the frame with a utility knife to eliminate any remaining residue. Note down the dimensions of the frame. These dimensions can be taken to the hardware or home center store, and the new frame will be cut to a smaller size. This will ensure that the pane fits perfectly and allows for expansion and contraction.

Place the new window in the frame and push it into the frame by using your hands. Putty

A hurled baseball or an unintentional rock, or falling branch could cause a window pane to break or crack. Most windows can be replaced easily by putting in a new piece. The glass is held in place by a small metal clip called a glazier's point and putty, which is often called glazing compound. Remove the old pane and clean the area with an abrasive, pull-type scraper or wood chisel. Wear gloves and safety glasses when working. Place it into the rabbets, where the glass will be placed. The glass must rest against the putty on both sides. If needed gently tap your glass into the rabbet using your thumb.

If the new pane is cracked, you can use the silicone caulk or glass glue based on solvents to seal the crack before pressing it into the sash. If the crack isn't sealed, you'll need to use putty to keep the water out. After the putty has dried then clean the oily film off the glass using a rag and allow it to dry completely before painting. If you paint before the putty has completely dry, it will not form an effective seal and could leak or discolor in time.

Paint

You might be worried about replacing a broken piece of glass. The truth is, replacing a single pane of glass doesn't need to be costly even if you do it your own. Even a double-paned window can be replaced for a fraction of what it would cost an expert.

If you're working with large glass windows first, ensure that it is securely fixed to the frame. This can be made relatively simple and fast using the right tools and techniques.

When you are ready to begin with the removal of the window pane. Take out the metal glazing points that are attached to it. These are essentially small metal triangles which function as "nails" that keep the window in in the wood frame. They are placed under a bead of glazing putty, which transforms into a solid molded wedge that secures the window in place and hides the points.

After removing the old pane, clean the frame and wood. Scrape off any paint and sand down the rabbet grooves where the glazing points used to be.
