How to Replace Window Panes

A cracked window pane can be a nuisance. It could be a chance to upgrade your windows to energy efficient or insulated ones to enjoy benefits such as improved comfort, increased resale values and lower utility costs.

This is a project you could do yourself for only a fraction of the cost of hiring a professional. You only need the right tools and a few hours of your time.

Glass

If your single-pane windows are old broken, deteriorating or damaged replacing them with modern glass that is tempered or insulated will increase energy efficiency and decrease noise while maintaining the historical integrity of older homes. A majority of homeowners with hand tools can replace windows with ease. You will also need an extra window pane, glazier's tips, pliers, and latex glaze putty. If you need to you can make use of a heat gun to warm the old putty. Before starting, put on gloves and safety goggles as working with broken glass can cause injuries.

Remove any broken glass pieces that remain. It is best to use pliers for this however, a flathead may work as well. After that, use a wood chisel or putty knife remove the rest of the old putty from the frame and sash. Be careful to not break the window sash. Be careful and slow. This should be done on a ladder, not on the ground. Also, you should have someone on the ground to hold it steady.

Prepare the window frame to receive the new pane after you have removed the old putty. To allow for seasonal expansion or contraction and contraction, subtract 1/8 inch from the measurements of width and height. Install the new window sash after the glazing compound has dried. The first step is to coat the wood with a heavy coat of Linseed oil. This will stop the new putty from drying out and cracking when it absorbs moisture. Use a brush to apply this coat, or the tip of the blade. Then use the chisel on the back of the tool or the back of the putty handle to gently smash the new sash or glazier's tip into the rabbet grooves. Repeat this process in intervals of 10 inches all around the frame.

Putty

A baseball hit or a rock thrown in error, or a tree falling could result in a broken or cracked window. Most windows can be replaced easily by putting in a new piece. The glass is held in place using a small metal clip called a glazier's point and putty, which is often called glazing compound. When you are ready to begin taking down the old window pane. Remove the metal glazing points attached to it. They are basically tiny metal triangles that act as "nails" which hold the window in within the frame of wood.
