The sash is the internal framing that moves vertically upwards or downwards in windows that open. This article will show you how to do simple sash repairs.

Weather Stripping

Wooden window sashes can add an elegant appearance to your home. They are also durable and will last for many years when they are maintained properly. However, they can become damaged or degraded with time due to exposure or normal wear and tear. Sash repair experts can restore windows to their original condition and maintain their beauty much longer than replacement windows.

The first step to repair sash window damage is to fix weather stripping. It's found on both the sash as well as the frame. It can cause drafts if it's worn or loose. Start by identifying the window's brand and the date of manufacture for the glass (etched on the corner of the glass or on the aluminum spacers between panes). Remove the sash, and mark its size and width so that you can get new weather stripping that is compatible with the original.

Then, you can remove the sash from its holder, and place it on a flat surface to allow you to reach all four sides. If the sash is double-hung, you'll also need to remove the weights and their ropes, which should have fallen into the pocket of the jamb liner. After removing the sash using the utility knife, take off the weather stripping from the old sash by hand or with a putty knife.

This will protect the putty and give your sash a fresh look.

Sash Hardware

The hardware that holds the window sashes may wear out over time and with use. This could result in the window or door that is difficult to open or close. The good thing is that fixing and replacing this hardware is generally quite simple and inexpensive. If you're having trouble opening the sash, spray some lubricant into the jamb channel. Then slide the sash open to see if it resolves the problem. If not, the problem is likely with the sash balance, and you'll need to remove the sash in order to access the hardware.

Sashes for windows should be able to open and close without much effort. However, this can be difficult if weights are worn out or the sash connecting rail isn't coated. This issue can be caused by a number of factors, including lack of maintenance or by a mismatched weight rating for a particular sash.

It is crucial to have the tools needed before you start. Begin by marking the position of the hinge channel on the frame with a pencil (Photo 1). This will allow you to put the channel in the right location after you've completed. Remove the sash and take out all the hardware, including the beads for parting cords, chains, and cords that help to hold the sash. Sash Weights

Sash weights can be replaced to enhance the efficiency of your window sash and decrease the energy cost. Sash weights are made of heavy lead or iron cylindricals that are contained in a concealed cavity and attached by a rope to the movable window sash. After removing the access panel, you are able to begin working on the sash. Utilize a flat bar, or chisel to pry the tiny partsing beads out of their grooves. It's important to take your time, as these are often wedged or nailed in place. If the sash remains in place, pry out the mortise and the tenon joints by using pin punch and hammer or screwdriver, then unhook the wood pegs attached to each component. You should be able to move the sash back and forth freely, though it might require oil if it feels stiff.

With the sash in an open position With the sash in an open position, measure the sash chain or cord to extend from the pulley at the top of the jamb to the sash slot at the bottom.
