There are some really thrilling scenes as Avon is forced to make the difficult choices to protect his team and shows his soft side. The characters have plenty of depth, and each has a distinct character that makes them seem real. This is a tale that will leave you wanting more. The writing is flawless, and the story has a real sense of place. It's an amazing piece of writing by an author who is at her best.

The 1972 release of Kathleen Woodiwiss' sexually explicit novel, The Flame and the Flower marked a shift in the direction of Avon. Avon would later release a number of more sexy romances such as The Wolf and the Dove in 1974 and Rosemary Rogers’ Sweet Savage Love later.
