The sash is an interior frame that moves vertically up and down in windows that are open. This article will demonstrate how to carry out a few simple sash repair.

Weather Stripping

Wooden window sashes are a great way to add a classic look to your home. They are also durable and last for a long time if they are properly maintained. However, they may become damaged or degraded in time due to exposure to the elements and normal wear and tear. Once you've removed the sash using a utility knife, you can use it to cut away the weather stripping from the corners. Then, take it off by hand or using a putty knife.

Once the sash is clear it is time to replace the parting stops. These are long pieces that split the sashes. Pam prefers the standard 1/2-inch by 3/4 inch window trimmings from the lumberyard. However, you could also use with a scrap piece of wood.

After removing the parting stops and trimming them to your desired length, apply a thin layer of glazing compound over the bottom of the sash. Smooth out the compound using your putty knife and let it dry for at least a few days. Once it's fully cured and dried, apply a second coat of acrylic latex paint. This will protect the putty and give your sash a new appearance.

Sash Hardware

Sash weights are heavy lead or iron cylinders, which are enclosed in a hidden cavity and linked to the moveable window sash using a rope. Once the new weight has been installed, you can thread an appropriate length of string through the pulling mechanism. Then, attach the string to your boxed frame. Leave a few inches of space at the head of the string to allow for future adjustments.

Sash Cords

Most double-hung windows of the past have a cord or chain attached to the weights which keeps the sashes in balance within the jamb. Over time, these cords may become damaged and make it impossible to raise windows. A new sash cord will give you the ability to move the sash upwards and downwards and will keep it in its place when opened.

The first step in replacing sash cords is to find and remove the access panels in the jambs. They are usually nailed or screwed in and must be removed or moved. It may be possible to take them out using a hammer or chisel, however, it is best to lay out dust sheets before starting any work.

After the access panel has been removed, you can start working on the sash. Prise the narrow parting beads (also called "tie rails") out of their grooves using flat bar or chisel. They are usually wedged in or nailed in, but they can be removed, so it's worth taking your time. If the sash is still in place, break the mortise-and-tenon joints out with a screwdriver or hammer and then remove each wood peg. The sash should move around freely now, however it may require some lubrication in order to feel less stiff.

Determine the length of sash chain/sash cord needed to reach the sash slot on the bottom from the pulley on the top of the jamb. Cut the cord or chain and secure it as in Step 6 above. You can use a hammer, Sash Window Repair nails or screws. However nails are less likely to cause damage.

If you haven't purchased a kit that replaces the old counterbalance system, it is recommended to keep the original balancing weights in place. They are not expensive and are easy to install if you purchase them at architectural salvage stores. Depending on the dimensions and shape of your window, you might need to install one or two sashweights in order to keep the sash open.
