Similarly, Massive Attack's brooding Angel shows off the XM5s ability to produce precise and precise bass notes.

The battery life is also excellent, offering up to 30 hours of listening time with ANC active and 40 hours when it's turned off. This is enough to last for an entire weekend or a few days of heavy usage.

The XM5s are not water resistant or dust resistant. In fact, Sony recommends that you avoid sweating on them or wear them in the rain. This may not be a big deal for most people however for those who spend much time in the gym or live in a humid area this could be a significant issue.

Apple AirPods Max

The Apple AirPods Max are a pair of over-ear wireless headphones with Bluetooth technology and noise cancelling. They feature 40mm dynamic drivers that are designed by Apple and have a an audio profile that is neutral and concentrates on the highs and mids while not going too loud on either end of the spectrum. They are perfect for music and movies. They also have superior fidelity when compared to other headphones.

The headphones have a lightweight build that feels comfortable on the head. The earcups, which are constructed of memory foam and covered with woven fabric, fit comfortably over the ear they do not place pressure on the sides or forehead. The ear cups can be tilted and rotated to accommodate different head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges offer a strong, but not too much clamping force that makes sure the ear cups stay in place during listening sessions.

Toggle noise cancelling mode by pressing a small button on the top of the right earcup. It also has a pushable jog dial-like button similar to the digital Crown on the Apple Watch. You can turn it to control the volume and press it once, twice, or three times to playback the controls. Siri can be activated by pressing and holding the button. These buttons are placed well and easy to use, but I was disappointed that there wasn't the power button that could turn off the headphones when they are not in use. The headphones are put into standby mode when removed from your ears or when they are put in their case. They come back to life when you place them on your head.

Another feature that is quite cool is spatial audio, which utilizes the accelerometers and gyroscopes of the AirPods Max and your iPhone or iPad to determine where you're moving, then repositions sounds to make it seem like they're coming from these locations. This creates an immersive theater-like experience for films and videos that were recorded in 5.1, Headphone Wireless 7.1 or Dolby Atmos. Only iOS devices can be used to listen to audio in spatial format.

The AirPods Max is a decent pair, but I would feel a little ripped off when I spend $549 at an Apple Store knowing that the next-generation model will be better within a year. AirPods Pro are more expensive and have better battery life and advanced features.
