How to Replace Window Pane Window Panes

A damaged window pane can be an inconvenience. It can also be an opportunity to upgrade your glass to energy efficient or insulated windows to reap benefits like greater comfort, a higher the value of resales and lower utility costs.

You can do it yourself for a fraction of what it would cost to employ an expert. It requires the right tools and only an hour or two of your time.

Glass

Replace your old single-paned windows with tempered insulation glass to improve energy efficiency, reduce noise, and protect the original character of your older home. The replacement of windows is simple and can be done by most homeowners who possess basic hand tools. In addition to a replacement windows pane, the following items are needed such as latex glazing putty; pliers, glazier's points and an electric heater to warm the old putty, if needed. Before starting, put on protective gloves and goggles since working with broken glass could cause injuries.

Begin by removing any remaining broken pieces of glass. This is best done using a pair of pliers, though using flathead screwdrivers can work in the pinch. Use a wood chisel, or putty knives, to take away any old putty remaining around the frame and the window sash. Be careful to not damage the window sash. Be careful and slow. It is recommended to do this on a sturdy ladder rather than on the ground, and to place someone on the sash in order to help hold it in place.

Once you have removed all the old putty, you can prepare the window frame for the new pane. To allow for seasonal expansion or contraction, subtract 1/8 inch each from the measurements of the width and height. These measurements can be sent to an hardware or home centers store to get a piece cut of glass stock to the proper size. You can also cut the glass by yourself if you have the right tools.

Glazier's Points

The glazier's points are tiny triangular pieces of metal which help to secure the glass into the window frame without causing damage to the delicate surface. It's easy to learn how to use this hidden tool, and you'll save money on the expense of a professional installation.

After getting rid of the old putty glazier points as well as any remaining residue, clean the frame thoroughly with an utility knife. This will prevent the new putty drying out or cracking due to the moisture it absorbs. Apply this coat with a brush or the tip of your knife, then employ the chisel or back end of the knife to gently press the new sash and glazier's points into the rabbet grooves. Repeat this process at intervals of 10 inches all around the frame.

Putty

A baseball that is thrown or an unintentional rock, or a fallen branch can cause a window to crack or break. Luckily, most windows can be repaired by simply putting a new piece in the proper place. The glass is held in place by a small metal clip called the glazier's pointed and putty, often called glazing compound. If the new pane has a crack you can fill it with a solvent-based glass glue or silicone caulk prior to pressing it into the sash. Otherwise, you'll need to apply putty on the crack to create an airtight seal and keep water out. After the putty has dried and the film is oily, wipe it off the glass using a rag and allow it to dry completely prior to painting. Paint after the putty has dried completely. It won't make a strong seal and may be leaking or discoloring over time.

Paint

You might be worried about replacing a broken pane of glass. But the truth is that replacing one glass pane does not have to break the bank when you do it yourself. Even double-paned windows can be replaced for a fraction of what it costs for a professional.

First, if you are working on a large-sized window, make sure that it is securely fastened to the frame. This can be done relatively easy and quick with the proper tools and techniques.

When you are ready to start, remove the old window pane. Take out the metal glazing points attached to it. They are basically tiny metal triangles that function as "nails" which hold the window in in the wood frame. They are submerged under a bead of glazing putty, which transforms into a solid formed wedge that secures the window in place and conceals the edges.

After removal of the old pane clean the frame and the wood. Scrape off any paint and sand down the rabbet grooves, where the glazing points used to be.
