The WH-1000XM4s can also allow you to connect two Bluetooth devices simultaneously and then automatically switch between them as needed. You can enable this feature via the Sony Headphones Connect app and it works very well.

The touch panels are more sensitive than the XM3. They respond quicker to the touch of panels and are simpler to control when making a call or listening to music. Sony also included a feature that helps voices sound more clear and precise during calls, which is noticeable and a nice addition.

The WH-1000XM4s may not be perfect, but they are among the best wireless headphones we've ever examined. They're comfortable, well-made, and come with an outstanding battery that can last longer than 30 hours continuously. They can be used passively with a TRS cable. This is ideal for travel or preserving power.

The WH1000XM4s provide a superior alternative to the Bowers & Wilkins Wireless Over-Ears PX7 S2. The Sonys are more comfortable, and their ANC can block out more ambient noise. The B&Ws feature an EQ that is more flexible and an app companion to adjust the audio quality. The B&Ws are better built, and can pair with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. Additionally, they support aptX HD and feature an AI-driven engine that tries to upscale compressed music to high-resolution. This is called DSEE Extreme, and it improves the clarity of music when listening to lossless audio files.

2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless

The $329 Bose QuietComfort 45 noise-canceling headphones are the latest iteration of a headset that has become a staple for commuters and travelers around the globe. Rather than reinventing the wheel the new model follows the same formula that made its predecessor so popular, and adds USB-C, better noise cancellation and a longer battery lifespan.

These over-ear Bose headsets come with a premium feel and appearance, similar to the QC 35 II headphones that were before them. The headband, which is made of plastic, provides a firm feel thanks to the metal hinges at pivot points. It also has the familiar ratcheting mechanism whenever you expand or retract the ear cups. The cups feature soft cushions that fit comfortably over the ears and don't put pressure to your head. They weigh 238 grams and are fairly compact when folded. They can be worn with a sweater or coat since they can be worn even when not on your head.

Despite their reputation for comfort, the QC45s don't offer the best sound in this price range. The frequencies are tinny and lack the depth that headphones with higher prices might be able bring out. The upper registers are boosted which is great for most music genres but can be a problem for more delicate and complex genres. The bass is good, but it lacks power.

One feature that's not present is the ability to pause playback whenever you take the headset off. This is standard in this price range and is something Bose's competitors have long offered. Another issue is the absence of an in-app EQ. Bose offers preset EQs within the app but it would be nice to have a manual control.

Bluetooth 5.0 is supported, including multipoint and more advanced codecs like aptX Adaptive. Download the Bose Audio App to adjust the sound and voice settings.

The QC45s have four microphones built-in to hear your voice when on the phone. They have excellent call quality, however they don't allow you to silence the voice when playing back as other wireless headphones. Update: As of February 2022, the firmware update to the QC45s provided manual EQ options in the audio app which is a welcome improvement.

Focal is a French audio brand that is known for high-performance bt headphones with long lasting comfort and a style that lets listeners know they're listening to something special. The Bathys are their first wireless noise cancelling headphones. They are stunning in appearance and sound. They also come with an inbuilt high-performance USB DAC which means you can use them for both wireless and wireles Headphones wired listening.

The Bathys are very efficient in terms of battery performance with Focal claiming 30 hours of continuous Bluetooth playtime. We actually got a bit more, with over 40 hours of playtime on average of a single charge. If you need to charge your headphones then the indicator light on the right earcup will go red.

They offer a good amount of features for a pair of headphones of this price with support for multiple devices simultaneously and automatic pairing (though you'll have to select the source device each time you want to listen). They have a built-in microphone that can be used to control voice assistants such as Siri or Alexa. For headphones with over-ear connectivity, the Bathys are very good in our tests of noise cancellation, reducing the background sound by around 9 decibels on average. It's not as good as the ANC found in the Sony WH1000XM4 or Bose QuietComfort45/QC45 Wireless, but it is still effective.

In our tests of the quality of sound from headphones, the Bathys did well overall, with a a frequency response that mostly matches the SoundGuys headphone preference curve, with only slight differences in the bass and mids. The Bathys have a booming sound that can make vocals, instruments and cymbals seem unreal.

You can wear them wherever without fearing that other people will hear your music. The microphone has a decent recording quality via Bluetooth with only a slight distortion in the mid - to treble range.

4. Sennheiser Momentum 4

The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless is a new version of the company's flagship Bluetooth headsets. The Momentum 3 was a solid, but not spectacular entry in this class. The new pair is a step up from the previous model, featuring a sleeker look, improved gesture control and an enormous battery life.

The improvements are subtle but make for an over-ear set of headphones that feel like an upgrade. The Momentum 4s are flat and don't fold. They come with a hardshell case to protect them when traveling. They also follow the pattern of many other recent Bluetooth headphones, like the ones from Sony and Bowers & Wilkins, to be completely device-independent. They work with both Apple iPhones and Android phones, but lack the AirPods extra features, such as Find My Support and head-tracked spatial audio.

The most significant change is the huge battery that can last for up to 60 hours with noise cancellation on. This is more than twice as much as most of the other brands and enough to go on a long-distance trip without worrying about finding an outlet.

Billy Steele, senior editor at Engadget, gave the headphones a score of 82. He cited their audio quality and wireles Headphones ANC features as strengths. His only complaint is that they lack a sense gravitas in the mids and the treble, which means that orchestral pieces tend to sound flat instead of grand. Fortunately, they will shut down after 15 minutes of sleep by default, and can be turned off manually off with the power button.
